Saint-Tropez makes you work for it a little. The village sits at the end of a peninsula reached by a single main road, and that is exactly why it suits a classic car so well: once you're there, everything happens on small roads between vineyards, pines and beaches, at cruising pace. From the citadel overlooking the gulf to the lanes of La Ponche, the old fishermen's quarter, the village still has the outline that cinema made famous when And God Created Woman was filmed here in 1956.
The peninsula is shared by three villages. Saint-Tropez has the harbour and Place des Lices, Ramatuelle has the five-odd kilometres of Pampelonne beach and its circular hilltop village, and Gassin has the lookout perched above the gulf. At the head of the bay, Grimaud and the canal town of Port Grimaud open the road into the far wilder Massif des Maures.
For classic car rental in Saint-Tropez, the Mini Moke (€390 per day) is probably the most Tropezian of them all: open, simple and made for beach tracks. The peninsula loop: Pampelonne, Ramatuelle, Gassin
About 35 km, 1h30 of driving, half a day with stops
Leave Saint-Tropez on the Route des Plages (D93), then drop down to Pampelonne along the lanes leading to Tahiti beach and its neighbours. Climb back up to Ramatuelle, a village wrapped around its rock, then take the little road past the Paillas windmills: from the ridge, the view runs from Pampelonne bay to the Îles d'Hyères. It comes down into Gassin, whose terrace looks over the whole gulf. Head back via La Foux and the coast.
Grimaud, La Garde-Freinet and the Maures ridges
About 60 km, 2h of driving, allow a full day
Start with Grimaud, its hilltop village and ruined castle, with Port Grimaud below. The D558 then climbs through cork oaks and chestnut trees to La Garde-Freinet, an old cork village tucked into the hills. From there, the Maures ridge roads give you the sea on one side and forest on the other. Come down through Plan-de-la-Tour and Sainte-Maxime, then follow the gulf home on the D559. In high summer, check the wildfire risk first: access to some of the Var's forests is restricted on certain days.

- Rentals run from 9am to 8pm. June and September are the sweet spot: warm, the beaches still lively, the roads clear. In July and August, set off as soon as you get the keys and avoid entering or leaving the peninsula in late afternoon. In late September, Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez regatta fills the harbour and the village.
- Driving and parking
- The La Foux roundabout at the entrance to the peninsula jams quickly in summer, and that's where most time gets lost. In the village, use the harbour car park or the one under Place des Lices, then walk. The Pampelonne car parks charge in season and fill up by late morning.
- Rental conditions
- Drivers must be 25 or over and have held a licence for at least 3 years. A deposit secures the booking, the balance is paid at handover, and the security deposit depends on the car. Insurance for two drivers and 150 km per day are included. A round trip from Nice goes beyond that allowance, so mention it when you ask for your quote.

Is 150 km a day enough once I'm there?
Yes. The peninsula loop is about 35 km and the Maures circuit around 60 km. A round trip from Nice, on the other hand, uses up the allowance on its own.
What time should I set off in summer to avoid traffic?
As early as you can after the 9am handover. Do the beach or the villages in the morning, have lunch there, and stay away from La Foux between 5pm and 7pm.
Which retro car is best for Pampelonne beach?
The Mini Moke, no question: open on all sides, four seats, easy to park and completely at home on beach tracks. For a smarter arrival at lunch, go for the Mustang convertible.
How much is the security deposit?
It depends on the car: €4,000 for the Mini Moke, €5,000 for the 1965 Mustang or the Pagoda, up to €12,000 for the Shelby AC Cobra. Each car's page shows the exact amount.
