From Allée du Moura, head for Boulevard du Prince-de-Galles above the Côte des Basques, the beach where European surfing began in the late 1950s. Drop down to the Port des Pêcheurs and walk out to the Rocher de la Vierge across its footbridge. Cruise past the Grande Plage and the Hôtel du Palais, once Empress Eugénie's summer villa, then climb to the lighthouse on Pointe Saint-Martin, next to Le Phare golf course, one of the oldest in France. Finish in Anglet with the Chambre d'Amour and the Boulevard des Plages up to the Chiberta pine forest. A perfect first outing in an unfamiliar car.
The Basque corniche to Hendaye
Half a day, about 70 km
Our most requested drive. Follow the coast down to Saint-Jean-de-Luz, cross Ciboure, then pick up the D912 corniche road at Socoa. For around ten kilometres it runs along the top of the flysch cliffs, layered grey rock sliced into blades by the Atlantic, with the Spanish coastline straight ahead. In Hendaye, stop at the Abbadia estate, a neo-Gothic castle designed by Viollet-le-Duc, then say hello to the Deux Jumeaux rocks at the end of the beach. Back via the A63 in about half an hour, or the same way round if the light is too good to leave.
Arcangues and the hills, back via Bidart

To see the Pyrenees without straying far from the sea, head to Arcangues, fifteen minutes inland. The village sits on its hill around the church, the pelota court and the cemetery where singer Luis Mariano is buried, with La Rhune on the horizon on a clear day. Carry on along the lanes of Arbonne and Ahetze, past meadows and red-timbered Labourd farmhouses, then drop back to the coast at Bidart for the Sainte-Madeleine chapel perched above the beach. Return via Ilbarritz and its castle facing the waves.

- Best season and hours
- Rentals run from 9am to 8pm. May, June and September are the sweet spot: quiet roads and soft light. In July and August, set off early for the corniche. From late September the sun sets before 8pm, so a Côte des Basques sunset fits inside your rental day.
- Driving and parking
- Central Biarritz means narrow streets, one-way systems and underground car parks: park up and walk the last stretch to the Rocher de la Vierge. All three cars have manual gearboxes and period brakes, so leave a little extra room and anticipate.
- Rental conditions
- Drivers must be 25 or over and have held a licence for at least 3 years. A deposit secures the booking, the balance is paid at handover, and the security deposit is €4,000 for the Fiat and €5,000 for the Porsche or Mercedes. Full tank out, full tank back.
