Driving the Mercedes Pagoda 280SL
The Pagoda Grey is driven with your hand on the gear lever. Its manual gearbox brings out the best in the 2.8-litre straight six, flexible from low revs and smooth all the way up, with that hushed, very Mercedes soundtrack. The 280SL is not a brutal sports car. It is precise, well damped and planted, and it rewards a flowing style rather than late braking. Two seats, firm chairs, an upright driving position behind the large, slim wheel. The soft top folds under its cover behind the seats, and the boot takes two weekend bags. Based on the French Riviera, it is for drivers who want to experience a Pagoda up close, hand on the lever, on the switchbacks above the sea.
Where to drive it
From Nice, take the Grande Corniche (D2564), the highest of the three corniche roads. It climbs above the port, crosses the Col des Quatre Chemins and runs past the Grande Corniche park and Fort de la Revère, whose viewpoints take in the whole coast from Italy to Cap d'Antibes. Carry on to the Col d'Èze and La Turbie with its Roman Trophy of Augustus, then come back down the Moyenne Corniche past the foot of Èze village. Half a day, best in late afternoon light.
