Driving the Mercedes 350SL R107
The 350 SL belongs to the generation that followed the Pagoda: wider, heavier and far more comfortable. Its 3.5 litre V8 and automatic gearbox make it a natural cruiser. It moves off gently, overtakes without effort and stays composed on a fast road as well as on a seaside lane. Power steering makes manoeuvring easy, even in a packed harbour car park. This example has the four seat layout, so two passengers can ride in the back for short trips, and the trunk is roomier than in most period convertibles, with space for proper travel bags. Where to drive it
For Saint-Tropez, the easiest option is to ask for delivery to your hotel or villa around the gulf, quoted on request, so your kilometres are saved for the peninsula itself. Then drive the classic loop: the Route des Plages towards Pampelonne, the climb to the hilltop village of Ramatuelle, then Gassin and its view over the gulf, before rolling down to the Saint-Tropez harbour in the late afternoon.
