Driving the Porsche 911 Carrera 2.7L
With this 911, the whole experience is mechanical. The air cooled 2.7 litre flat six sits behind you, and you hear it as much as you feel it, its metallic note hardening as you work up through the gears. The manual gearbox has a slightly long, vague throw, typical of 911s from this period, and the unassisted steering is heavy when parking but turns precise and full of feedback once you are moving. With the engine slung out behind the rear axle, traction out of corners is superb, as long as you do not lift off abruptly mid bend. The luggage compartment is up front and takes one or two soft bags. This one is for people who love driving and are already at ease with a manual.
Where to drive it
Head west out of Nice, through Saint-Paul-de-Vence and Vence, then take the D2 climbing up to the Col de Vence. Within minutes the beach Riviera disappears: tight hairpins, dry stone walls and an almost empty limestone plateau at the top, with views reaching the sea on a clear day. This is where a 911 of this generation comes alive, in second and third with the engine singing. Come down at an easy pace for a coffee on Place du Peyra in old Vence before heading back to Nice.

Porsche 911 Carrera 2.7L: your questions
Is a 1976 Porsche 911 hard to drive?
It asks for commitment: heavy steering at parking speed, a firm clutch and a gearbox that takes some learning. You need to be 25 or over, have 3 years of licence and be a confident manual driver. We go through the car with you at handover.
How is it different from the 911 Targa in Biarritz?
This one is based on the French Riviera and suits the twisting roads behind Nice. The Targa, based in Biarritz, adds a removable roof panel for open air driving in the Basque Country.
Are 150 km enough for a day in the hills?
Yes for a loop like Nice, Vence and the Col de Vence, with room to spare. If you want to go further, describe your plans in your request and the team will build the route with you.
What does it cost and what is the deposit?
690 euros a day, 9am to 8pm, with insurance for two drivers and a tailor-made itinerary. The security deposit is 5,000 euros.
