Driving the Mini Moke
The Moke is the most laid-back car in the fleet. No doors, a canvas canopy for a roof and four open-air seats: you get in wearing swimwear and get out with sand in your shoes. Underneath sits Mini running gear, with a manual gearbox and front-wheel drive that make it easy to place and very nimble in narrow streets. The small wheels and firm ride remind you it began life as a utility vehicle, and at cruising speed the wind is everywhere, so this is a seafront car, not a motorway one. There is no lockable storage, so do not leave belongings on board. It is for people who want to laugh, stop at every cove and value good humour over speed.
Where to drive it
From Nice, take the Basse Corniche to Villefranche-sur-Mer and park near Marinières beach, facing the bay. Then loop around Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat on its pine-lined lanes with a stop at Paloma beach, and carry on to Beaulieu-sur-Mer and the Baie des Fourmis. Barely 20 km in total, but a whole day of swimming. The Moke squeezes into spots where bigger cars give up.
