Driving the Porsche 911 2.7L Targa
The Targa keeps all the character of an air cooled 911 and adds the sky above your head. The roof panel lifts out and folds away in a few moves, the roll bar stays put, and you get the fresh Basque mountain air without the buffeting of a convertible. The 2.7 litre flat six sits at the back, giving solid traction on the often damp lanes of the Basque Country, and its sound quickly becomes addictive on the climbs. The gearbox is manual, and the unassisted steering is heavy when parking but full of feel on the move. The stowed roof lives in the front luggage compartment, so space there is limited; as in every 911, the two tiny rear seats are best used for bags or a child.
Where to drive it
Set off from Bayonne and follow the Nive valley up to Cambo-les-Bains, then on to Espelette with its strings of chilli peppers drying on the house fronts. Continue to Ainhoa and its long street of Labourd style houses, then Sare. Climb to the Col de Saint-Ignace at the foot of La Rhune, where the bends give the 911 exactly what it enjoys, before dropping down through Ascain to Saint-Jean-de-Luz to finish by the ocean. A loop of green hills, white villages and narrow roads, roof off the whole way if the weather allows.

How does the Targa roof work?
The central panel comes out by hand and stows in the front luggage compartment. The roll bar stays fixed, keeping the body stiff. We show you how it works at handover.
Can passengers ride in the back?
A 911's rear seats are very small: fine for a child on a short trip, otherwise handy for luggage. For two adults, the car is perfect.
Is the 911 Targa a good fit for Basque roads?
Very much so. Inland roads are twisty and hilly with few straights, which is where a 911 feels most alive. You just need to be comfortable with a manual gearbox.
What is the price and the deposit?
690 euros a day, 9am to 8pm, with 150 km, insurance for two drivers and a tailor-made itinerary. The security deposit is 5,000 euros.
