Driving the Volkswagen Golf 1
Our Golf 1 is a convertible, easy to spot by its central roll bar, and it is the most affordable car in the fleet. A five-speed manual and a 1.8-litre, 112 hp engine in a light body make it lively and playful, with precise steering that begs you to string bends together. There is no odd driving position or strange pedal layout: you feel at home within minutes, as with any well-sorted eighties car. Where to drive it
The Golf loves the twisting lanes behind Menton. From Monaco, climb to the old village of Roquebrune and on to Gorbio, perched among olive trees. Drop back to Menton and take the road to Sainte-Agnès, which claims to be the highest coastal village in Europe at nearly 800 m above the sea. Tight hairpins and plunging views over Garavan bay: exactly where a light little front-wheel-drive car has the most fun.

Yes, it is 290 euros per day, with insurance for two drivers, 150 km and a tailor-made itinerary. The security deposit is 4,000 euros.
Is it easy to park on the Riviera?
That is one of its big advantages. Compact and nimble, it slips through village streets and tight car parks far more easily than a large roadster.
What are the rental conditions?
You need to be at least 25, have held your licence for 3 years and be comfortable with a manual gearbox. A deposit is taken when you book and the balance is paid at handover.
