Driving the Jaguar type E
Driving an E-Type starts with that endless bonnet stretching out in front of you, and learning where its nose ends in a bend. The Series 2 manual gearbox is fully synchronised and shifts without drama, but the clutch and steering want a firm hand at low speed. Once you are rolling, the 4.2 litre straight six is remarkably flexible: you can hold third through a sequence of curves and pull away again without changing down, with a smooth, very British growl building as the revs rise. You sit low with your legs stretched out and the sea at shoulder height. The soft top is operated by hand, and the small rear boot takes one soft bag each, not a hard suitcase. This is a car for people who drive for the pleasure of it and are already comfortable with a stick shift.
Where to drive it
Take the Grande Corniche out of Nice, the highest of the three coast roads, built in Napoleon's time. It climbs above Villefranche, crosses the Col d'Èze and sweeps on to La Turbie and its Roman Trophy of Augustus, with Monaco laid out below. It is ideal E-Type territory: wide bends, light traffic in the morning and plenty of lookouts where you will spend as long admiring the car as the view. On the way back, turn off at the Col d'Èze down to Èze village for lunch high above the sea.

Jaguar type E: your questions
Is the Jaguar E-Type hard to drive?
Not hard, but it asks for your attention. It is a manual with a firm clutch and heavy steering when parking. If you drive a manual regularly, a few miles is enough to settle in, and we walk you through the car at handover.
Can I bring luggage?
The boot is small and shallow, so think soft day bags. If you are on holiday, leave the suitcases at the hotel or ask for delivery to your address, quoted on request.
Is it a good car for driving around Nice?
It copes, but it is happiest out of town. In summer traffic the heat from the straight six reaches the cabin. Set off early, head straight for the corniches and save the city centre for the end of the day.
How much does it cost and what is the deposit?
The E-Type rents for 1,190 euros a day, from 9am to 8pm, including 150 km, insurance for two drivers and a tailor-made itinerary. The security deposit is 8,000 euros.
